The Allure of Style ~ Mary McDonald + Operation Smile

Hello Friday! Spring is officially here and today I am all about colour, whimsy, elegance, sophistication, luxury, and extravagance.  Today, I am in love with the incredibly talented and super stylish Mary McDonald.

My friend Amy talked about Million Dollar Decorators a couple years back over dinner and I didn't even know what the show was about.  All I knew was Amy LOVED one of the decorators on the show: Mary McDonald.  I didn't really start watching the show until I was blown away by Mary's transformation of the beautiful guest room into a sensational spa-inspired guest house.  Yep … episode 1 of Season 2 and I was hooked!

Mary has an absolutely breathtaking fabric collections with Schumacher ranging from classic chinoiserie to graphic geometric patterns in 4 different colorways to bring freshness and a modern contemporary edge to a traditional space.  This living room is lively and young thanks to the vibrant tangerine and who needs artwork when the drapes are stunning chinoiserie panels!

Now here are a few things I love (as if I don't love everything in the room):

Mary is also known for her lady-like, feminine rooms that are lavish, glamorous, and serene.  I am crazy about this monochromatic mix of soft grey and cream for luxurious, restful getaway to enjoy my favourite new novel sitting under the elaborated drapery daybed or by the window bench, or having tea with my best of friends while enjoying the sight of these beautiful hand painted floral wall panels.  There is always something fun and unexpected in Mary's space and in this case, I love the border effect on the ceiling!

Mary's own bedroom was transformed in front of our eyes as the season finale of Million Dollar Decorators - Season 2.  This absolutely stunning wallpaper from Gracie Studio simply took my breath away with itsmost beautiful shade of jade and white.  The traditional yet youthful wallpaper works perfectly with the classic yet fresh wood burning fireplace.  Who doesn't want a wood burning fireplace in the bedroom? A few roses in pastel pink, antique silver dishes to hold your favourite jewelries, and exquisite white painted furniture for a crisp, refreshing look.  Who says old-world classic has to be dark and moody?

Mary's first book, MARY MCDONALD: INTERIORS, The Allure of Style, features many of her favourite interiors and illustrates how you can also achieve that timeless, elegant, layered look with a whimsical twist.  These brilliantly decorated spaces are filled with bold colours, fearless pattern plays, and yet in absolute harmony.  That's what makes Mary's style so unique and sets Mary apart from other designers.  #INSPIRED

Another extraordinary transformation on MDD was Monika Chiang boutique in Soho.  I am sure some of the conflicts in the episode were "dramatized" for reality TV, but look at this glamorously chic colour palette of lavender, peacock green, and gold!  I am sorry friends but for once, I actually have no words to explain to you why I would kill for Mary's signature designs.  #IDIED … #AGAIN

The space feels like a super-sized luxurious walk-in closet with sofa and chairs to sit while you decide on which garment and accessories to try out.  The brilliant chandelier, the emerald green tufted swivel chairs with gold base, the lavender grasscloth wallpaper, and that octagon table in black & gold: these are a few of my favourite things.

After such a long and dreadful winter, I don't know about you but I am totally ready to get ready for summer! The balcony at #ProjectChris is a blank canvas and I am looking at Mary's hip and current outdoor oasis as my inspirations.  Blue & White, soft grey neutral, or slate grey stripes, which one wins your heart?

Mary is not only extremely talented in creating dramatic and visionary spaces, but she also has a big heart and supports many charities that aim to enrich the lives of the less fortunate.  As we look at our photos with friends and families all with a nice smile on their faces, have we ever thought about some babies are born with face deformities such as cleft lip or palate, who are often unable to speak or smile?

Mary has thought about these children and is participating The Park City 2014 Celebrity Smile Challenge.  Your donation will provide free cleft surgeries to those who couldn't afford one, and change the children's lives forever.  As an added bonus, if you live in the US and have donated $100 or more, Mary will send you an personalized autographed MARY MCDONALD: INTERIORS, The Allure of Style as thank you.  So whether you live in the US or not,  don't delay and you can donate here.
