American Dream Builders w/ Nate Berkus~ Week 1

Hello Wednesday!  Are you tired of all the real estate show on TV these days? I have been looking for a good design show for awhile and I am glad that Nate Berkus' new show, American Dream Builders, is now on NBC every Sunday evening.  The show is about 12 talented designers competing for a top spot while making dreams come true for two families every week.  The designers are divided into two teams.  Each week the teams will have 5 days to makeover two homes in desperate need of TLCs.  That's right: from planning, design, shop, reno, to final reveal, all done in 5 days!

The teams will be judged by not only Nate, Eddie, and Monica, but members of the community.  The community will decide which team is the winning team of the week, and our judges will decide which member of the losing team will go home.  You know what that means? The makeover does not only need to be aesthetically mind-blowing, it will also have to be functional / practical in order to win the community votes.

To kick start Week 1, please welcome House#1: a Tudor style home that has lost most of its charm.  It is also lacking curb appeal and a family friendly entertaining space in the backyard.

In 5 short days, this house was transformed from an ugly duckling to this standout home with phenomenal curb appeal for that very important first impression.  Looking for inspiration to spruce up your own backyard for this spring/summer season? Check out this sensational backyard!  I just love that  fabric treatment.

This living room is classic, elegant, and full of character thanks to the gable ceiling and the panel details on the walls.  The white walls provide a blank canvas for the pops of vibrant colours and subtle patterns + textures to be the stars of the show.  The mix of furniture styles give the room its eclectic look,  My favourites: the super cool vintage floor lamp for an edgy, industrial look + an gothic style bench.

The kitchen has also received a complete overhaul.  I still can't believe all the updates was done within 5 days.  The crew and the suppliers must have only a few hours of sleep everyday to pull this off.  I love the relaxed, casual elegance feel in the eat-in area.  Its light and warm palette reminds me of Tuscany.  My favourite item in this room: the custom dining table and it was custom made by the team with the original flooring in the kitchen.

Ready to check out House #2? I bet you do.  Here is the transformation from the outside.  The exterior of the house gets a nice colour boost with a charming yellow and grey palette.  It is soothing for sure but the judges were not too sure about the bright yellow and how it referencees to a classic tudor home.

The foot print of the kitchen didn't change much here but it feels like a completely different space thanks to the removal of the peninsula, hardwood flooring throughout, modern classic drapery treatment, a statement lighting fixture, and a much more functional eat-in area for the family.  I would love to prepare and enjoy breakfast everyday in this kitchen.

Now the boy's and girl's rooms have been completely transformed from their former glories.  The girl's room was once a closet in the master bedroom!  I am in love with the boy's room for its fun yet sophisticated palette.  The grasscloth wallpaper and the window bench: A-Plus!

Who says a small space has to be blend and white? This girl's bedroom is a prime example of how a small space lives large!  By wrapping the entire room with this whimsical and graphic wallpaper, the room actually feels larger than it really is (you almost can't see where is corners in the room … that's the power of impactful graphic wallpaper).  My favourite in this room: the play of patterns in shades of blue and green.

The dining room takes on a traditional approach but wow, what a breathtaking space! I actually did have a "wow" moment at the reveal.  The ceiling had me at hello and it works so beautifully with the chandelier.  The dark deal blue on the dining chairs was an excellent choice to complement the other gold tone / accents in the room.  This is a perfect entertaining space in the evening!

Both teams have done an amazing job to transform the two houses but there can only be one winner.  The community has chosen House #2 as the winner as it is stylish and highly practical for the family.  Now each kid has his/her own bedroom, while House #1 lacks a functional bathroom due to a vanity disaster.

If you didn't catch the show on Sunday, here is the reveal and elimination:
