House Beautiful ~ Small Space Magic

Hello Friday! What is your plan for the weekend? It is hard to believe it is already the end of July and we are soon stepping into August already.  Fingers crossed summer sticks around well into September since we had a really late start this year.  Anyhow, Chris and I are house hunting again this weekend, and the agents have lined up a few places for us on Saturday (follow my house tour via Instagram).

As much as I love older homes with characters and rich in architectural details, the homes we have seen so far are either lacking both credentials or just way too much house/ work for Chris (we are talking about 4 bedrooms, low ceiling/ unfinished basement).  We will see a lovely condo with fireplace, bay windows, and approximately1,200 square feet.  This blank white canvas caught my eyes immediately and feeling inspired by condo, I am sharing with you two of my favourite small spaces in the July/August Issue of House Beautiful.

Hard to believe this bright, elegant, high style Manhattan apartment with ample of architectural details was once a dark bare box with no characters.  Designer Kelly Giesen had done an amazing job to re-imagine the space, let the 11 foot tall windows be the inspiration, and infuse the space with tailored furnishings and the classic elements (such as the marble fireplace mantel, wall panels, and chunky crown moulding) in a gorgeous apartment in Paris.

I love the idea of adding simple moulding on walls to create subtle visual interest + the perfect place to display arts.  This kitchen is breathtakingly beautiful and this is in an apartment!  The oval window, the cabinet work is superb, and I love those art deco inspired stools! I actually picked one of those a while back and it is being gold-leafed as we speak!

Have to take a moment to talk to you about this spectacular lucite chandelier.  The starburst design adds an unexpected modern twist to the traditional kitchen, ties in to the legs of the graphic chairs, and can you imagine the sparkles when it is illuminated? LOVE IT!

Behind the kitchen is a jewel like powder room with sparkly mosaics on both the floor and the walls.  See the stunning pair of closets on the right?  Once just an entry to the space, it is now a grand entrance with mouth blown glass chandelier and incredible details on the closet doors (check out the starburst motif at the top, and those mirror + crystal door handles!!).  What a first impression!

The bedroom is calm, serene, and restful.  I love the shimmery effect of this John Mahoney's Kiku Komon wallpaper, the window bench (I would love to sit there for my morning tea), and of course the custom de Gournay wallpaper panel for a fabulous shot of chinoiserie.

Inspiration No. 2 is also an apartment in Manhattan (can't you tell I just love NYC?).  Rather than keeping the color palette a serene watery blue, designer Ashley Whittaker transformed the space with strokes of bold patterns, strong colours, and the prettiest shades of pink and lavender.  Don't you just love how light and cozy this chesterfield sofa upholstered in linen canvas? Such a treat to lounge on it after a long day of work.  The graphic patterns on the pillows and the mod black & white artwork add life and energy to the living room.

Did you peek into the two rooms behind the living room? I sure did and they are fabulous!! The navy Zebrine wallpaper, the raspberry red pagoda chandelier, and the pops of citrus lemon yellow nailed it in the kitchen on the left.  On the right is the foyer and to balance the intense energy of the kitchen, Ashley picked the equally dramatic Maharani by Osborne & Little to grace the entrance.  Navy, red, and white are the common treads between the two spaces. Mind you I might be biased toward the entrance since I also have the same wallpaper in my own dining room ... just saying!

Ashley also squeezed in a desk area off the living room.  To visually define the space and give the space its presence, this glam, rich in patterned office is grounded by an eye-catching Madeline Weinrib rug.

A restful retreat is what we all need and with a happy mix of coral and sky blue, grasscloth wallpaper, a little bit of brass, and a bright pop of yellow blooms, this is where I want to spend my evenings.

One more space I want to share with you from the July/August Issue of House Beautiful.  It is an foyer and OMG is right! I was floored by the silver-leafed ceiling, the antiqued mirrors on the walls, an intense stroke of emerald green, and the vibrant teal on the vintage stools ... OMG!
