Joel Bray: Looks for Less Reno Tricks

Happy Friday! We've almost made it to the weekend and are you ready to tackle a few simple DIY projects that offer big impacts in your home? Joel Bray, the DIY expert and talented design editor at House & Home Magazine, offers you 6 simple tricks to add high style to your home without breaking the bank.

Have a few builder basic flat front doors in your home? No problem! A fresh coat of sumptuous teal and a few strips of nailhead trim, you have got yourself a door similar to those from the "Million Dollar Decorators"!  Another trick to turn your brand new IKEA dresser into a piece with character and class is by installing leather strips as drawer handles: an instant master piece my friends.

Craving for a cozy fireplace during those blistery cold winter evenings? Add an authentic look to your electric fireplace with a faux brick chimney breast.  Make sure the chimney breast is slightly narrower than the mantel and extend it from floor to ceiling for a realistic look.

I have always love extra deep baseboard for its traditional architectural appeal.  To save a few pennies from having to rip out the existing basic baseboard and install new ones (extra material and labour costs), why not add a small piece of decoration trim 1" or 2" above your existing baseboard, and paint the trim & baseboard + the wall space in between the same color for an illusion of an expensive deep millwork?

Who knew plywood can be this sexy when stained in dark walnut or ebony!  They are so good looking that you can install the planks (custom cut to size from sheets) as flooring.  The result is pretty spectacular don't you think?
