Style at Home: Christine Hanlan

Hello Monday! It is true that it rained all weekend here in Toronto, and it's also true that Hurricane Sandy is causing some serious concerns regarding major rain fall, strong wind, and potential power outage.  While we prepare ourselves for the stormy weather over the next couple of days, I thought why not embrace the miserable days with brightness and happiness, a fresh traditional home by the talented Christine Hanlan.

I have been a big fan of Christine's classic, timeless approach for an effortless elegance design aesthetic for a long time.  In fact, I didn't even know Christine is one the design editors of Style at Home when I fell in love with her home back in 2009!  Christine's home has gone through a few style makeover since then, and can we say divine with "Let the Sun Shine In"? Love the yellow + grey color palette and the mix of modern geometric prints (who doesn't love the imperial trellis by Kelly Wearstler?) with traditional floral and toile.

What a breathtaking living room: dynamite gilded gold chandelier with wall sconces, unexpected yet totally whimsical white feather headdress, spectacular details on fireplace, and did you see this gorgeous vintage faux bamboo coffee table? LOVE!

Here are a few tips from Christine on how to create a timeless, elegant home:

Light and airy is indeed the overall design direction for this open concept living/dining combination.  I am crazy about that faux bamboo chandelier in the dining room and how the neutral wallpaper blends in seamlessly with the beautiful millwork.  The slipcovered end chairs in white cotton add a sense of casualness and echo the chic french country toile in the living room.

The side chairs are updated to these classic Louis XVI chairs with medium tone frames, bold black & white floral on the outside backs, and my favourite geometric linen as inside backs and seats.  The dining room is mature and sophisticated.

Behind those to-die-for pocket doors is Christine's family room and kitchen.  You can read about Christine's modern bistro kitchen makeover here

You see the benefit for keeping the overall color palette neutral? You can switch up accessories and easy to change elements for an instant, refreshing makeover without breaking into the piggy bank.  The citrine palette is cheerful but I'm with Christine, I am all over this bold rich navy + crisp white palette for an absolute showstopper.  Hello graphic rug and ikat pillows ... you will both be mine!

I know we are still a couple of days before Halloween ... but if you are like me (who doesn't really care much for trick or treat), your mind is probably already on how to decorate for "the most wonderful time of the year".  Other than being totally obsessed with Christine's sumptuous color palette, I am also crazy about the handcrafted sensibility of her gift wrapping ideas and entertainment decorating tips.

Before wrapping up today's appreciation moment, I have one more space to show you: a kid's bedroom at Christines.  This room is sensational and is totally a room I wish I had when I was a kid, wait ... even in my teenage years.  The playful patterns on the fabrics, the hit of blacks from the lampshades, picture frame, and the chairs, and HELLO faux bamboo madness next to the bed!!  If my cousin allows me, this will be the inspiration for her nursery.

Good luck everyone for a grey and rainy Monday!
