Summer Report with Style At Home

Happy Monday!  Summer is here and the weather in Toronto this year is beyond gorgeous for camping adventure, cottage getaway, or just a lazy afternoon at the beach.  While we enjoy what Mother Nature offers us at the great outdoors, why not get inspired by our beautiful surroundings and bring some of these organic natural beauties inside our homes.

The experts at Style At Home have put together their three top trends for Summer 2012 to help you welcome "summer" into your home.

* Trend 1: Aegean Blue

Azure, turquoise, and indigo, these are the various shades of blue you see at Georgian Bay.  If you love blue as much as I do, check out this spectacular room designed by Sarah Richardson Design.  The graphic, geometric rug adds colors, patterns, and it helps ground this off-white space.  I particularly love the wall art on the left and the drapery panels with a leaf motif: they remind me of the fabulous time I have at cottage country!

With a touch of polished chrome and tarnished metals, the space is now edgy and has a eclectic vibe.  Love how the blues pop right off against the creamy white walls.

* Trend 2: Kilim

My basic knowledge of Kilim is that they are semi-antique rugs that are vibrant in colors, rich in patterns, and soft in texture.  Thinking that perhaps I should educate myself a little more on the topic, I  read up Kilims at Wikipedia:

"Kilims are flat tapestry-woven carpets or rugs produced from the Balkans to Pakistan.  They are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile.  The weave has about 14 threads of warp and 16 threads of weft to the inch.  The pattern consists of narrow stripes of blue, green, brownish yellow, and red, containing very small geometric designs."

With the brief introductory of Kilim behind us, here is a room Sarah and Tommy designed with the rug as their jumping off point.  Bold, sumptuous, and very inviting: I will live in this house in a heart beat!

* Trend 3: Country Colours

When I saw that beautifully painted hutch in soft medium-tone grey on the Style At Home trend report, I immediately thought of the DIY vintage furniture makeover mastered by Jennifer from Rambling Renovators.  The smokey blue colour on the hutch and console works beautifully with the cheerful yellow on a pair of chairs and pillows in this cozy living room.  The brass hardware on these vintage pieces are truly stunning, and they suit the style and character of this period home.

Have to show you a close-up of this adorable photo of Jen's daughter, Chloe, and this casual yet sophisticated vignette.

Inspired by these trends? I would love to hear from you of how you would incorporate (1) shades of blue, (2) Kilim, and (3) Country colours, in your home.

I've been looking for a kilim to purchase, where would you recommend getting it Tim?
